The nation’s ports and waterways handle more than two billion tons of cargo annually – this figure is expected to triple by the year 2020 - and 95% by weight of all U.S. overseas trade. Continued expansion of port facilities and intermodal transportation systems in the U.S. and abroad, and the associated stresses on the environment, the transportation infrastructure, and global-national-regional social/economic conditions will necessitate new technologies and innovative training at all levels of management and design.
